How to Calibrate an Online Ruler
An online ruler draws a scale on your display, but browsers cannot reliably know the physical size of every screen. Calibration with a known reference is needed before treating centimetres or inches as physical measurements.
Why calibration matters
Screens have different pixel densities, operating-system scaling settings, browser zoom levels, and physical dimensions. A ruler that assumes one fixed pixels-per-inch value can look correct on one display and be inaccurate on another.
A browser generally cannot read the exact physical width and height of your monitor. Treat an uncalibrated ruler as a visual guide, not a verified measuring instrument.
Calibrate the ruler
Use a reference whose real length you know. Do not assume a payment card or any other object has a standard size unless you have verified that specific object.
- Open the online ruler on the device and browser you intend to use.
- Place a physical ruler beside the on-screen scale, or use another known-length reference that you can measure reliably.
- Adjust the calibration control until the on-screen distance matches the physical reference.
- Keep browser zoom and display scaling unchanged while measuring, and re-check calibration if those settings change.
When not to rely on it
Do not use an on-screen ruler as the sole basis for medical, engineering, manufacturing, or other safety-critical measurements. For those tasks, use an appropriate physical measuring instrument.
