How to Count Words and Characters

Different writing platforms may count words and characters differently. Check whether the limit includes spaces, line breaks, punctuation, or formatting before submitting your text.

Word count versus character count

A word count estimates how many words appear in a text. A character count measures individual characters and may include spaces and punctuation. A platform's own counter is the final authority when a submission has a strict limit.

Emoji and some accented or combined characters can be represented by multiple Unicode code points. A tool may count visible characters differently from the way a programming language counts underlying string units.

Check text against a limit

  1. Paste the final version of your text into a word or character counter.
  2. Check the platform's rules to see whether spaces and line breaks count.
  3. Make edits, then recount the exact text you plan to submit.
  4. If the destination has its own counter, compare the two and follow the destination's result.

Keep the final text consistent

Copy the final version only after checking it. Extra spaces, a new line, or a last-minute edit can change the count.
